Phillips Farm 2006

About the Farm...

Phillips Farm is a family run farm located in Germantown, Maryland. During the summer we specialize in super-sweet corn. We also grow tomatoes, cantaloupe, watermelon, peppers, cucumbers, zucchini, and other types of squash. Throughout the summer, we have special events on the farm that give families the opportunity to come and learn about the farm. In the Fall, we turn the farm into a huge pumpkin patch. We offer hayrides to the field to pick your pumpkin. When you return, visit our display area containing gourds, corn stalks, Indian corn, straw, many fall vegetables, apples, and apple cider. Special school tours, birthday parties, evening hayrides and group tours are available by appointment. All season long, we have friendly farm animals to pet, a giant haystack to climb, a historic display of farm equipment and Germantown History. We are looking forward to seeing you from summer vegetables season through the fall Pumpkin Festival. Our farm welcomes you always.

What is Super-Sweet Corn?

There are three basic types of sweet corn: Conventional, Sugar Enhanced, and Super Sweet. Conventional-Silver Queen is probably the most popular. Conventional corn has the lowest sugar content. It will only stay fresh for a day or two. Sugar Enhanced- Sugar Buns and Sugar Snow are our best known sugar-enhanced corn. They have twice the sugar content of conventional corn. Super Sweet- This is the sweetest corn on the market today. Super- Sweet corn has a genetic component that slows down the conversion of sugar to starch. If kept cold, it will stay fresh for up to five days- much longer than conventional corn.

Sugar Buns- an early season sugar enhanced yellow corn. small but very sweet.

Snow White- Excellent full season super-sweet white corn.

How Sweet It Is- The name says it all! A full season white corn. Often a crowd favorite.

Candy Store- A full season Bi-color. One of our best!

Farm Tour Days July 22-23,2006 10am-4pm

Phillips Farm is proud to participate in the annual Montgomery County Farm Tour Day. This is a chance for people of all ages to take a free hayride and learn about a working farm. There will be pony rides, hayrides, animals to pet, a haystack to climb, and see how large our giant pumpkin has grown! We are trying to grow the largest giant pumpkin ever grown in Maryland. Wish us luck! There is no charge to attend!

The Pumpkin Patch Sept. 29 - October 31 M--F 3pm-dark Sat-Sun 10 am-dark

Each year Phillips Farm is turned into a giant pumpkin patch. This is an opportunity for people to take a hayride out to the pumpkin patch and pick their own pumpkin right out of the field or explore a corn maze. Children can climb on the haystack or pet the friendly animals. Visitors can purchase a wide variety of Halloween decorations as well as fall vegetables, apples and apple cider. Special group programs - Birthday parties and evening campfires are available by appointment.

Birthday Party or Evening Campfire

June 20 to October 31 by appointment- Farm birthday parties are fun for all ages. The birthday party gathers at the animals where they are given animal food. They can climb on the haystack or crawl through the tunnel. When the group is ready, they board the tractor drawn hay wagon for a hayride around the farm ending at your private birthday campsite (during pumpkin season there is a stop at the children's pumpkin patch). A campfire is available. Parent takes over the party from there. They can bring food, roast hot dogs, make smores, hang a pinata or other creative ideas they might have. A charcoal grill can be provided upon request.
